Resumen

WEIGAND, Phil C.. The Coli Volcano and its Neighbor, Guadalajara. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2012, vol.33, n.129, pp.291-318. ISSN 2448-7554.

The Coli Hills are located on the outskirts of Guadalajara, at a place know popularly as La Primavera (Spring). The Coli itself an active sunken volcano (caldera volcánica), whose formation dates to the Late Pleistocene, but that today represents a very real danger to the nearby city of Guadalajara. Sunken volcanoes are much more dangerous than strato-volcanoes (or composite volcanoes), like the Volcano of Colima or El Ceboruco, because they tend to erupt violently with little or no warning. Even when warnings do occur they tend to be very subtle. Because the city of Guadalajara lacks the equipment required to measure and monitor geological activity inside the Caldera de Coli, it is unnecessarily exposed to an inminent danger. This brief study presents a description of the formation of the Caldera de Coli and summarizes this volcano's historical and modern character.

Palabras llave : volcanism; Guadalajara; urban planning; geology.
