In Latin America, the notion of "literary regionalism" is applied to two literary currents: on the one hand, the literature of a certain region with its localisms; on the other the so-called "regional" or "regionalist novel", which includes Indianist and indigenist narratives. The apogee of the latter occurred during the first three decades of the 20^th century. This article underscores the fact that in contrast to the local literature of a region, the regional or regionalist novel is a symbolic representation of the nation itself and, in this sense, constitutes a national allegory.
