HERRERA GONZALEZ, Patricio. The First Fruits of Freedoms Conquered": Social Catholicism and Political Learning in Times of Revolution, Zamora (1909-1913). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.137, pp.217-253. ISSN 2448-7554.
This article identifies the intervention -discourse-action- of social Catholics in relation to workers and peasants in Zamora de Hidalgo, Michoacán, from 1909 to 1913. The presence of Bishop José Othón Núñez in the diocese and the political activism of priests and lay people alike inspired many Catholics to mobilize their energies and establish several Catholic organizations concerned with problems that affected workers. But this was also an opportunity for the Church's hierarchy and social base to openly compete in the public sphere during the Madero revolution, and thus legitimize their existence in civil society.
