BASTARRICA MORA, Beatriz. In the hands of the photographer: the construction of representations of women and the personal feminine rostrum in 19th-century Mexican photography. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.140, pp.43-69. ISSN 2448-7554.
This essay analyzes the different strategies used by photographers and the women -from different social classes- who were photographed in the second half of the 19th century in Mexico, to construct the image of 'the other' and their personal rostrums in the broader context of the representation of the figure of 'woman'. To this end, it applies key concepts from the world of semiotics (Barthes 1986; Eco 1999), sociology (Bourdieu 1989; Goffman 1987; Veblen 2005), and cultural history (Burke, 2005).
