BAILON VASQUEZ, Fabiola. Madams and brothels in La Verde Antequera, 1890-1912: the appropriation, defense and negotiation of "tolerated" sexual commerce. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.140, pp.295-332. ISSN 2448-7554.
In the late 19th century, the state of Oaxaca received the influx of significant amounts of capital that made it the focus of a short-lived economic boom that attracted travelers and merchants who perceived an opportunity to successfully develop their businesses. Included among them was a group of women -'Madams'- who established brothels and dedicated their time to sexual commerce, availing themselves of their own abilities, the permissiveness allowed by the authorities, the consent of a patriarchal society, and the existence of abundant masculine demand.
