During the Enlightenment, the press propitiated diverse reactions among ecclesiasts, ranging from vitriolic hatred to fervent adherence. Among those seduced by this novel means of communication was Father Traggia (1751-1817), who began his journalistic career in 1791 at the Diario de Valencia. The aim of this essay is to determine this Barefoot Carmelite friar's concept of journalism, as he had no qualms in affirming that 'the press was more effective than the pulpit'.
