Resumen

CARDONA MACHADO, Héctor. From the Materiality of the Past to the Legitimation of the Present: Archaeology and Patrimony. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2016, vol.37, n.148, pp.41-61. ISSN 2448-7554.

Accessing what we call heritage demands considering it a process based on a conscious discourse that speaks of current needs in relation to past times; one that likely sets out from a process of the negotiation of identity to select certain material referents from the past to represent it. Archaeology has contributed to the construction of these representations which -while subject to the discipline's methodological rigor- seem, rather, to be legitimized by external actors, usually in the political and economic sectors. We think it is essential to visualize these aspects in order to justify versions of the present and increase our awareness of the so-called activations of patrimony.
