This article analyzes the existing literature on ranchers (rancheros) in western Mexico, their possible historical origins, and relationships among livestock-raising, commerce and society. Based on the proposals of specialists in agrarian matters -especially ranchero societies- we propose a categorization of the types of studies that have been conducted to identify the characteristics and evolution of analyses of ranchero society, while also determining the elements that are present in, or absent from, this field of study.
