This article addresses the need to analyze the relationship between land and water as an indispensable method to understand the development of the Mexicali Valley. It considers the fact that the river belongs to an international basin and also the implications of the gradual modification of its current overtime. It demonstrates that discussions centered in land, if important and significant, are far from fully explaining the problems of the region, since the water factor has a social, economic and political importance that has not been studied until this moment in regional historical texts.
