Resumen

PONTON CEVALLOS, Daniel. Progressivism and police technology: Analysis of the punitive boom in Ecuador. Perf. latinoam. [online]. 2023, vol.31, n.62, 006.  Epub 31-Mayo-2024. ISSN 0188-7653.  https://doi.org/10.18504/pl3162-006-2023.

The prison population in Ecuador began an explosive growth in 2010, within the framework of a “progressive” government. What has been the rationale for this increase? This research analyzes the role of police technology in the punitive rationale of a “progressive” government. It is argued that the incorporation Compstat was the product of a technical-political transaction with dynamic and multipurpose effects on the bulk of Ecuador’s criminal policy, and that this generated the prison explosion. Thus, it can be observed how a tool built for the Anglo-Saxon context of the 70s and 80s, adapts and reproduces to different realities and local needs, thus demonstrating its hegemonic strength.
