LEYVA-VAZQUEZ, José Ignacio; MARTINEZ-MARIN, Dolores Guillermina; FLORES-BELLO, Liliana  y  MARTINEZ-BADILLO, Rosa María. Main reasons for gynecological consultations among adolescents. Ginecol. obstet. Méx. [online]. 2021, vol.89, n.5, pp.373-377.  Epub 28-Feb-2022. ISSN 0300-9041.  https://doi.org/10.24245/gom.v89i5.5175.

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the main reasons for gynecological consultation in adolescent girls.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective, homodemographic and single-center study carried out at the General Hospital of Zone 20 of the IMSS Puebla in adolescent patients attended between January 1 and December 31, 2019. Inclusion criteria: adolescents between 10 and 19 years of age, with any gynecological condition, with or without any added comorbidity. Exclusion criteria: pregnant or postpartum women. Elimination criteria: files with incomplete information. Study variables: age, schooling, occupation, body mass index and reasons for consultation.

RESULTS:

We reviewed 467 records of adolescent patients who were diagnosed with a gynecologic condition, but only 450 were included in the study. The first gynecologic evaluation was, on average, at 18 years of age (21.8%). The main reasons for consultation were abnormal uterine bleeding (n = 66), fibrocystic mastopathy (n = 63), dysmenorrhea (n = 55), secondary amenorrhea (n = 45) and polycystic ovary syndrome (n = 41).

CONCLUSION:

The five main reasons for gynecological consultation of adolescents were: abnormal uterine bleeding, fibrocystic mastopathy, dysmenorrhea, secondary amenorrhea and polycystic ovary syndrome, as reported in the international literature.
