GUTIERREZ-ROMAN, Claudia Ivonne. Development of fetal and neonatal pain. Rev. mex. anestesiol. [online]. 2023, vol.46, n.4, pp.251-255. Epub 26-Feb-2024. ISSN 0484-7903. https://doi.org/10.35366/112295.
Pain is the main symptom reported worldwide, it is the main cause of human suffering. It is considered that for an individual to feel pain, the following must be present: nociceptors, pain neurotransmitters, pathways that carry the stimulus to the brain, the thalamus and connection with the cortex. For a time it was considered that at this stage the nervous system was not mature enough to feel pain, however, there is currently evidence that the fetus has pain; and its presence alters the development of the nervous system. This review provides an updated view of the ontogeny of fetal and neonatal pain.
