ln this text, the author discusses the nature of Public Administration as a field of contemplation and academic studies. By focusing on the technocratic, social constructivist and clinical discourses, Thompson addresses how each of these perspectives deals with the basic doctrinal issues of public management, considering the visions in this regard that Americans and Europeans researches are currently developing. At the end of the article the author presents some ideas and conjectures about the future of this discipline.
