MAZARIEGOS HERRERA, Hilda María Cristina. "Twisting" Faith to Heal: Women, Inclusive Churches, and Psycho-Spiritual Therapeutics. Convergencia [online]. 2024, vol.31, e22094. Epub 06-Mayo-2024. ISSN 2448-5799. https://doi.org/10.29101/crcs.v31i0.22094.
"Twisting the faith" is not merely an exercise in discourse, conducted through critical biblical exegesis, but also involves concrete action aimed at transforming the realities faced by dissenting women believers, who are often subject to discrimination and exclusion. I will demonstrate how, in contrast to the pathologization of homosexuality through methods like "sexual reorientation therapies," inclusive churches and faith communities have developed a form of psycho-spiritual therapeutics focused on healing the souls and bodies of dissenting individuals. This presentation is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted within three inclusive churches/faith communities: Affirmation LGBTQ+ Mormons, Family and Friends in Mexico; Inclusive Christian Mission in CDMX; and Episcopal Church of San Lucas in Merida, Yucatan. This research was carried out during my postdoctoral tenure at IIA-UNAM.
