As a result of an extensive revision of literature, 8 genera and 71 species of Asteraceae, endemic to Mexico and of aquatic and semiaquatic habitat, are presented. These represent 13 tribes and 37 genera of the family. Eighteen species are only known from the type location and surrounding area and 4 of them have not been recollected for more than a century. All are herbaceous emergent plants; the majority are perennials while the annuals grow mostly in temporary pools. Most of these species are found in the Sierra Madre Occidental and in the Transmexican Volcanic Belt, at altitudes above 1800 m, in small isolated wetlands. Aquatic endemic Compositae are scarce in southern Mexico and there are no reports from the state of Tabasco, nor the entire Yucatan Peninsula. In view of their rarity, it is estimated that 43 species are higihly susceptible to extinction.
