The deaths by external causes in Brazil is reaching epidemic levels due to high levels and increasing tendencies, becoming in this way in a break to the regional development. The 80's decade was particularly important to develop a starting process of violence in the country. This study focuses on the description of the evolution of the levels and patterns of mortality by external causes of death in Brazil and its federal units by sex and ages in the 80's decade. And, in the context of the main causes of death, the mortality by accidents and violence in the total of the population is analized. Various indicators were generated from wich a strong increase trend of the homicides was observed. An increase of the strenght of external causes in the most developed regions comparing with the less developed ones and an enlargement of these deaths for younger ages were observed.
