This paper briefly explores the contributions of different authors to the definition and analytical elaboration of the relationship between migratory processes-specifically emigration-and environmental processes, principally in rural areas of countries in development. The following topics are dealt with: a) emigration as a response to environmental factors: the potential of the environmental change hypothesis to explain the emigration process; b) categories of causes: the possibility (or not) of isolating and analyzing the effects of environmental factors and establishing structures of causality, and c) migrants and refugees: the definition/ classification of populations displaced by environmental factors.
