This article analyzes the most significant sociodemographic changes in marital and non-marital unions in Latin America that could suggest a possible second demographic transition. Three main subjects are examined: changes in the mean age at first union, increments in the dissolution of unions and the prevalence of consensual unions. In each subject covered, we synthesize the present body of knowledge and explore the links between social inequality and the changes in family formation patterns. From the analysis presented in this paper, we concluded that there is not enough evidence to suggest that the region is undergoing a second demographic transition.
