Resumen

LAHOZ, Diana; VAZQUEZ-GARCIA, Verónica  y  ZAPATA-MARTELO, Emma. Do men and women live poverty is the same manner? A look inside the indigenous households in Santa Marta Sierra, Veracruz, Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2011, vol.17, n.70, pp.125-150. ISSN 2448-7147.

Poverty is one of the most studied issues nowadays. However, lack of consensus on definitions and measurement methods remains. The fact that the household is used as the unit of analysis obscures the differences in female and male poverty. This paper aimed at illuminating the authority system that rules in the household, and at comparing such differences. Fieldwork was conducted in Encino Amarillo, a highly marginalized Nahua community, located in southern Veracruz. Data was collected through a survey, a workshop and in-depth interviews. Results show gender differences in all basic needs (subsistence, protection, understanding, leisure, participation, freedom, affection and identity) as well as in the capacities of women and men to satisfy such needs.

Palabras llave : poverty; female poverty; marginalization; gender; basic needs.
