Resumen

CERVANTES, Lilian. Supports in the homes with at least one elder member in the State of Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2013, vol.19, n.75, pp.63-92. ISSN 2448-7147.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the characteristics of the homes in which the elderly people of the State of Mexico live, and also to analyze those who receive some sort of informal support, as well as whether the 60-years-old and older population are the recipients or the providers of said support. The analysis uses data from the Survey on Demographical Aging within the State of Mexico (Encuesta sobre Envejecimiento Demográfico en el Estado de México -ESEDEM) 2008, carried by the Center for Research and Advanced Population Studies of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados de la Población de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México CIAP-UAEM). The results show that the elderly people live mainly in nuclear homes and perform roles in which they not only have to take care of themselves; they also take care of other people. Within the State, 42.2 per cent of the 60-years-old and older population receives some sort of informal support and 16.3 per cent provides some sort of support. The study shows that the 60 years old and over people mainly interact with their progeny, family-in-law, spouses, grandchildren and parents.
