Resumen

DAVILA-CERVANTES, Claudio Alberto  y  AGUDELO-BOTERO, Marcela. Avoidable mortality in Mexico and its contribution to years of life lost: Analysis by degree of state marginalization, 2001-2010. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.82, pp.267-286. ISSN 2448-7147.

We analyzed the weight of avoidable-mortality in Mexico, its contribution to the years of life lost (YLL) and its evolution between 2001 and 2010, by degree of state marginalization. Based on vital statistics, we calculated mortality rates and YLL. Mortality rates due to avoidable causes were higher for groups with the lowest degree of marginalization; poorest states lost more YLL due to these causes of death. Men also had higher mortality rates due to avoidable mortality compared to women; though non-avoidable deaths contributed more to the loss of life-years for men. Results show wide disparities in the magnitude and impact of avoidable-mortality by groups of state marginalization and gender. We highlight the need to reach a consensus on a list of avoidable mortality adjusted to the Mexican context.
