DIAZ TENDERO BOLLAIN, Aída. Economic solidarity towards the elderly from the perspective of political economy. Pap. poblac [online]. 2015, vol.21, n.85, pp.79-108. ISSN 2448-7147.
This paper proposes a conceptual framework around State-exercised (or not) economic solidarity towards the elderly, from economic solidarity dimensions, analyzed with a Political Economy of Aging perspective. This approach links Gerontology with Sociology -specifically with theories of social stratification around the dimensions of class, gender and race/ethnicity- as well as with State Theories. Economic solidarity dimensions exercised by the State towards the elderly that were identified are: intergenerational, intragenerational, interclass, intraclass or intra corporation, and universal. For the assessment of the effect of such solidarity on inequalities detached of the dimensions of stratification such as class, gender, race/ethnicity, among others, two models of State were studied: the bismarckian and the beveridgean. The main finding is that the State is the only actor able to provide universal economic solidarity, and that only from this compliance can the other dimensions of solidarity be fulfilled.
