Oportunidades (Opportunities) Program has had a reduced and heterogeneous impact on the diminution of poverty levels in Mexico and the Northern Region; this to a good extent is explained by the insufficiency of the resources destined to alleviate poverty. In the light of the results, a doubt is that in a stage such as the current crisis, Oportunidades is insufficient to prevent the impoverishment of population. In order to estimate poverty we use the monetary approach and apply the poverty line method; then, we resorted to the statistical micro-simulation technique to capture the effect of Oportunidades. The information comes from the National Survey on Incomes and Expenditures carried out by INEGI (2002, 2006).
