Resumen

JUAREZ BOLANOS, Diego. Perceptions of multigrade rural teachers in Mexico and El Salvador. Sinéctica [online]. 2017, n.49. ISSN 2007-7033.

This paper is about a qualitative research that examined the perceptions of multigrade rural primary school teachers about the challenges and advantages of working in multigrade classrooms. The cases of four teachers, two in Mexico and two in El Salvador, were studied regarding the strategies they developed to attend students of different grades and ages within the same time and space, as well as their training needs. The data collection was carried out through interviews, and the analysis of the information was done through categories with the support of the AtlasTi program. The results show that teachers have a broad view of the causes of the problems of multigrade classrooms, which include deficiencies in their initial and continuous training, in addition to factors related to school planning and management. However, they perceive autonomy and freedom as advantages as well as the potentialities of working with heterogeneous groups and the relations established with their contexts.
