Resumen
VAZQUEZ LIZARRAGA, Rosa Isela. Which engineers does Mexico need?. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2012, vol.12, n.60, pp.125-135. ISSN 1665-2673.
The engineer is someone who, with the available resources and knowledge, provides society with useful creations. Mexico is the country with the sixth highest number of graduated engineering students in the world; however, there is a considerable discrepancy between their knowledge and what the country needs. Though the integral training of the engineering student does not depend only on schooling, it is part of the duty of education to develop tools such as logic, critical thinking, and argumentation, because this will help the student to reach the best conclusions about reality and to access knowledge with a critical and autonomous attitude that also includes a well-defined ethical dimension. In order to strengthen engineering, the investment in science (its main support) is imperative, as is the transformation of schools with a new focus on teaching and training.
