In the context of current discourse about the crisis in politics, this work reviews various tendencies in which contemporary democracy takes on and responds to the question of the limits and scope of political participation in contemporary democratic regimes. Specifically, this text takes the position that, while pessimistic prognostications of the possibility of participation within elitist frameworks are correct, the road to participation is also opening through various experiences in different social-historical contexts seen in new conceptual developments like citizenship theories, civil society, and democratic deliberation.
