Resumen

MONSIVAIS CARRILLO, Alejandro. The representative disaffection in Latin America. Andamios [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.35, pp.17-41. ISSN 2594-1917.

Representative disaffection is an attitude of estrangement and detachment from institutions and agents of political representation. An analysis of the Latinobarometro’s 2015 Survey shows that more than half of the population in Latin America feels representatively disaffected. This attitude is influenced by distrust of political institutions, dissatisfaction with democracy, and disappointment at the performance of the political system, among other factors. At the same time, there is evidence in some nations of the combination of remarkably low levels of representative disaffection and process of democratic decay. To address problems of representative disaffection, political systems should improve their efficacy and responsiveness, but also endorse and strengthen democratic procedures and institutions.

Palabras llave : Representation; political disaffection; public opinion; democracy; Latin America.
