GONZALEZ AVILA, María Eugenia; VERA LOPEZ, Juana Isabel  y  HERNANDEZ SOLORZANO, Sergio. Study of the Geographical Environmental Perception of the Pollution of an Urban Stream, Tonalá, Chiapas. Región y sociedad [online]. 2021, vol.33, e1510.  Epub 22-Mar-2022. ISSN 2448-4849.  https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2021/33/1510.

Objective: to study the residents’ contamination environmental perception of El Riito stream, located in Tonalá, Chiapas, and the problems between two communities living around the referred urban body of water. Methodology: it was analyzed quantitative and qualitative information of the inhabitants who have lived around stream for ranges between 13 and 23 years of residence. Results: it was evidenced that the space and time of residence influence the inhabitants’ perception of contamination. I was also observed the lack of participation and the institutional disengagement to remedy the problem in the micro-basin. Limitations: the earthquake that occurred in October 2017 could have influenced the low participation of local public officials in the interviews and of some of the citizens. Value: the investigation provides information on the social interaction on the urban stream, the water quality perception and its effects on health. In addition, it is proposed the concept of "urban stream" in an area understudied from Chiapas. Conclusions: the perception of pollution is differentiated between the populations of Tonalá and Paredón, which is related to the time of residence and proximity to the stream, to which is added the disconnection between the water managers and the population of the micro-basin.
