MELLADO IBARRA, César Iván y SANCHEZ TOVAR, Yesenia. Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in México and the Economic Growth of its Municipalities. Región y sociedad [online]. 2023, vol.35, e1818. Epub 01-Mar-2024. ISSN 2448-4849. https://doi.org/10.22198/rys2023/35/1818.
Objective: To identify which contextual factors produce an effect over entrepreneurship and to analyze the consequences of entrepreneurial ecosystems on the economic growth of Mexican municipalities. Methodology: Quantitative research, through a structural equations model, using data from Intercensal Survey 2015, Economic Census 2015 and 2019, and the National Statistical Directory of Economic Units from INEGI, with data of 2008 municipalities which model the Mexican entrepreneurial ecosystems. Results: financial and human capitals aid entrepreneurship development. Informality has a positive relationship with entrepreneurial activity. Highly entrepreneurial municipalities have the lowest economic growth. Value: the study of the entrepreneurial ecosystems of 81.46% of Mexican municipalities. The model had good fit measures and it enabled the test the hypothesis with a high reliability. Limitations: A longitudinal analysis that could be helpful to understand the evolution of entrepreneurial ecosystems was not made. It was neither included the institutional capital due to a lack of data. Conclusions: Mexican municipalities with the highest entrepreneurial activity are the ones with the slowest economic growth, due to the high levels of firms’ informality.
