The Steller's Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) has a discontinuous geographic range in the American Continent. In Mexico, the species has isolated populations in the northeastern region in the states of Nuevo Leon and Coahuila. As a result of monthly samplings in the municipality of Miquihuana, Tamaulipas, from January 2012 to February 2013, we report for the first time the occurrence of this species in the state based on 39 records. We observed the individuals in an Abies-Pseudotsuga forest, located higher than 3000 m in altitude, in the Sierra Madre Oriental (SMO). We considered that the population might be resident based on the courtship behaviour observed and the detection of an individual associated with a nest typical of the species. However, additional information is needed. We assume that the population recorded moved throughout the coniferous forests of the highlands of the SMO for its arrival to the area, and that it might be expanding to lower altitudes in the southwestern region of Tamaulipas.
