Resumen

FIGUEROA RODRIGUEZ, Katia Angélica et al. Factors that explain the yield of sugar cane at municipal level in Mexico. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.6, pp.1345-1358. ISSN 2007-0934.

The cultivation of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) is important in Mexico in terms of acreage, jobs created and producers involved in its cultivation. This article argues that, the yield per hectare at the municipal level of sugar cane cultivation is attributed not only to crop management factors and environmental, but requires considering factors related to competitiveness such as available services and social aspects as well. The research was descriptive and transversal; padron sugarcane information was used, generated (INEGI, 2007) of the 667 municipalities that reported production of sugarcane in the country, only 267 were able to build an index of services necessary to support the hypothesis, in total four indices were constructed with 18 indicators. For data analysis, principal component analysis was used and multiple regression models were generated. The results allowed to corroborate the hypothesis that the yield per hectare at the municipal level of this crop is mainly attributed to management thereof, crop damage arising from the environment, the services available for cultivation and social (education, housing and connectivity). We conclude that, the crop yield should be approached with a holistic view as it was possible to establish quantitatively interconnection not only agronomic and environmental factors, as traditionally thought. This justifies the design of a comprehensive policy to address the sector.
