Resumen

REYNARES, Marcela L.; SCHREIDER, Mario I.  y  SCACCHI, Graciela B.. Plan Dimensions of an Abutment Revetment and its Resulting Scours. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2014, vol.5, n.6, pp.83-101. ISSN 2007-2422.

Flexible revetments are often used in Engineering as countermeasures to reduce local scour at bridge location. This kind of countermeasure do not avoid that the scour hole occurs, In fact, the revetments only move the scour hole beyond the outer limit of the blanket. An experimental study of scour processes related to the vertical-wall abutments protected with articulated mats which were placed in a river flood plain is reported in this paper. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of apron width related to the maximum scour depth, the shape and volume of the scour hole, and its location. The experiments were carried out in a wide channel, which was able to suitably represent the conditions of the flow around of a relief bridge, keeping constant the geometry of the abutment and the hydraulic conditions. The results show that the maximum scour depths do not change respect to the observed one, when the abutment was not protected. The Froude number where the characteristic dimension is the bridge width remains as a representative parameter. The scour hole was deflected further away from the abutment, a distance proportional to the width of the protection, changing its shape. The scour hole was more elongate and therefore its volume increased in relation to the same experiment but without protection.
