Resumen
RICE CARLSSOHN, Robin Ann. La reinvención de la melancolía: "Primero sueño" de Sor Juana y Melancholia I de Durero. Valenciana [online]. 2015, vol.8, n.16, pp.77-99. ISSN 2007-2538.
Until the fifteenth century, Natural Medicine considered that melancholy was a lamentable disease that morally and physically affected the person afflicted by it. Under the influence of Florentine Neo-platonic thought, the melancholic became the prototype for the modern artistic genius. Dürer, who produced Melancholia 1 in 1514 and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz who penned "Primero sueño" around 1685 were heavily influenced by Italian Humanism. The article's hypothesis is that "Primero sueño" is an ideological ecfrasis of Melancholia 1 and that the two works are a watershed for the perceptual change of melancholy. Under the influence of Ficino's thought, amongst others, melancholy became a sign of genius and the desire to untie oneself from physical space and ascend to the divine contemplation.
