This year Mexico and the Republic of Korea celebrate 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations. The celebration of this anniversary is the right time to make a reflective effort on what has been the historical background that has shaped this relationship. Since late 19th century Korea showed more interest on this issue than the Mexican part. At present, however, both countries need to get together in order to work towards international cooperation. This was the aim for establishing a Mexico-Korea 21st Century Commission that elaborated a report, which along with the analysis of the evolution and perspectives of their bilateral ties made a series of specific recommendations in the fields of politics, economics, education, culture and scientific and technological cooperation. However, these recommendations have not yet been accomplished.
