Resumen

ARTEAGA BOTELLO, Nelson. Strengthening Democracy or the Patrimonial Regime in Mexico? Dilemmas in the Civil Sphere in the Face of Former President Salinas’ Fast. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.2, pp.77-98.  Epub 26-Feb-2024. ISSN 2007-7610.  https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.v8.n2.2021.a04.

Drawing on the theory of the civil sphere, there are competing explanations for how to interpret the fast that former president Carlos Salinas de Gortari carried out to demand that the authorities exonerate him from any responsibility in the investigations of the murder of Luis Donaldo Colosio -presidential candidate of the official party- and the economic crisis. Fasting was interpreted as a break from the unwritten rules of the regime and as a threat to the democratic transition. The dispute over the authenticity / inauthenticity of the fast also suggested the need to strengthen the presidential figure and accelerate the democratization process.
