This paper addresses the perspective of reading and writing practices in Deaf communities from an ethnolinguistic approach. The purpose of the research was to analyze the relationship between the written language and the culture of the signing communities from their own worldview. The data obtained from an inductive-interpretative procedure were extracted from the multimedia and narrative record of 63 Deaf Adults from Veracruz, the result of work in focus groups with a participatory and non-participant intervention. Preliminary findings indicate social and educational backgrounds, and to the redefinition of texts through socialization between users of Mexican Sign Language. The final conclutions point to the use of written Spanish with a social communicative purpose as part of the written culture of the Deaf adult.
