Introduction:
Polyps are elevations of the gastrointestinal wall towards the light, they can be adenomatous or not adenomatous. A larger size of colorectal polyps > 10 mm is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer.
Objective:
To compare the size with the result of histopathological study of colonic polyps observed through colonoscopy.
Material and methods:
Retrospective, transversal, descriptive. All patients sent to the gastrointestinal endoscopy service for colonoscopy, in which polyps were identified, biopsied and sent to histopathological study, from March 2018 to March 2019 were included. Patients with a history of colon cancer, inflammatory disease were excluded intestinal, polyposis and without histopathological report.
Statistical analysis:
Averages, percentage, frequencies and Chi square by means of SPSS v22.
Results:
A total of 714 colonoscopies were performed, 78 reported polyps as a finding in any segment of the colon and 60 met the inclusion criteria, excluding 18 patients according to the aforementioned criteria. According to the gender were 32 female and 28 males, with an average age of 62.3 years. The most frequent histological type was tubular adenoma with size less than 5 mm, in sigmoid colon and Kudo II, low digestive hemorrhage was the most frequent diagnosis of delivery.
Discussion:
This study demonstrates that advanced histological lesions can also be observed in polyps smaller than 5mm. It can be recommended to take biopsies to all the polyps observed during colonoscopies and to be sent to histopathological study.
