BECERRA ROLDAN, Braulio. Segmental and tonal interactions in possessed nominals from the Tulixtlahuaca Mixtec. An. antropol. [online]. 2021, vol.55, n.2, pp.91-106.  Epub 16-Mayo-2022. ISSN 2448-6221.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iia.24486221e.2021.77703.

This article describes the segmental and tonal interactions between nominals and pronominal enclitics of San Pedro Tulixtlahuaca mixtec, an Otomanguean language spoken in the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca. It will be referred N+E constructions to possessed nominals which exhibit the kind of interactions that this work deals with and the results presented here are based on the description of 688 of these forms. It will be seen that there are two types of interaction; the first is segmental and occurs in vowel sequences that arise between the final vowel of a nominal and the only vowel of an enclitic in N+E constructions; the second is tonal and occurs between the tones of the nominal and the tones of the enclitic. The findings will show that the behavior of vowel sequences in N+E constructions is determined by the syllabic structure of the nominal, the type of vowel quality that make up the sequences, the grammatical category of the pronominal enclitic and the pressure exerted by minimal word size in the adaptation of multimorphemic forms that preferably fit to a bimoraic structure. Regarding tonal interaction, it will be noted that the enclitics tone can modify nominal tones, according to how they are concatenated to the base and to the specific tones of each element of the N+E constructions.
