VIEYRA SANCHEZ, Lilia. An electoral newspaper: El 2 de abril (1880). Rev. panam. comun. [online]. 2021, vol.3, n.2, pp.93-99. Epub 17-Ene-2022. ISSN 2683-2208. https://doi.org/10.21555/rpc.vi2.2442.
The article analyzes the newspaper El 2 de Abril published in 1880 to promote the candidacy of Carlos Pacheco to the governorship of Puebla. The objective of this research is to demonstrate that this weekly newspaper was erected as part of the electoral strategy used by Porfirio Díaz in which it was fundamental to obtain the suffrage by remembering the battle of April 2, 1867 in which Pacheco lost an arm and a leg, but contributed to defeat the government of Maximilian of Habsburg. That heroic deed generated a patriotic symbol that Díaz wielded both in the case of Pacheco and Manuel González and during the electoral processes in which he was reelected for several four-year terms. The contribution of this research compared to the specialized studies on the electoral press, included here, is that it uses newspapers as a source to document the life of that suffragist weekly of fleeting existence of which little is known and provides data on its reception among the newspapers supporting Diaz and those opposed to his government. At the same time, it contributes to explain the reasons that originated its safekeeping in the Mexican Miscellaneous Collection of the Reserved Fund of the National Newspaper Library of Mexico.
