In the nineteenth century, reading travel books is essential to know the national identity of a country. This article aims to analyze the documentary sources used by Madame Calderón de la Barca in her work Life in Mexico during a two-year residency in that country (1839-1843). The main topics that appear described in its pages are documented in different periodical publications of the time such as The Mexican Mosaic, The Government Bulletin, The Cosmopolitan, One more newspaper, The Censor of Veracruz, The Mexican Mosquito and the Government Gazette, among others and in the travel book of the German historian Humboldt. An epistolary that generated many contradictions and ambiguities about the vision that the author offers about the Mexican country even in the use of the sources that document it.
