Resumen

HERNANDEZ JAIMES, Jesús. The metropolis of all America. Arguments and reasons of the failed Mexican Spanish Americanism, 1821-1843. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2016, n.51, pp.19-36. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ehmcm.2015.12.002.

This article analyses the different projects for the integration and federation of Spanish America that were published in Mexico between 1821 and 1843. The aim is to explain the political and social motives behind these initiatives. The article argues that the architects of the Mexican projects wished to form a common defensive front to protect the precarious independence of the region, and were convinced that Mexico should occupy a leading role within the Spanish American community. However, some, like Lucas Alamán, also considered that the integration of Spanish American markets would permit domestic industrialization and allow Mexico Spanish American countries to join the international economic system in conditions of equality with the great economic powers.

Palabras llave : Hispanoamericanismo; Spanish American integration; Mexican imperialism; Mexican economic thought; Protectionism.
