Resumen

SANTILLAN, Gustavo. Morality and Obedience. Ethical Debates during the First Federal Republic, 1824-1828. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2023, n.65, pp.35-62.  Epub 26-Jun-2023. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2023.65.77801.

The article approaches the political content of moral discourse during the second decade of nineteenth-century Mexico, a subject often neglected by literature. Far from being religious reminiscence-as it is frequently conceptualized-, moral discourse was linked to the construction of obedience to the State. The origins of virtue and its functions, institutionally and within society, constitute a frequent subject of study. These matters are present in public opinion, parliamentary discourse, and governmental action, usually associated to religious tolerance. This article analyzes the process of separation betwixt morality and religion, from 1824 to 1828, and proposes that interest in morality was mainly political.
