SERMENT GUERRERO, Jorge Humberto; MARTINEZ MARTINEZ, Estefany y ALCANTARA DIAZ, David. Participation of some recombination genes in the repair of double strand breaks of Escherichia coli strains exposed to gamma radiation. Rev. Int. Contam. Ambient [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.1, pp.59-75. ISSN 0188-4999.
All living organisms are naturally exposed to radiation from different sources. Ionizing radiation produces a plethora of lesions upon ADN that can be categorized as single and double strand breaks and base damage. Among them, unrepaired double strand breaks (DSB) have the greatest biological significance, since they are responsible of cell death. In Escherichia coli this kind of lesions are repaired mostly by homologous recombination. In this work the participation of some recombination genes in the repair of DSB is evaluated. E. coli defective strains were exposed to gamma radiation and incubated for different periods in ideal conditions. Both microelectrophoresis and pulse field gel electrophoresis techniques were used to evaluate the kinetics of repair of such lesions, reflecting the importance of each defective gene in the process.
