ACOSTA, Félix. The concept of family in Latin America population studies: State of the art and research opportunities. Pap. poblac [online]. 2003, vol.9, n.37, pp.9-50. ISSN 2448-7147.
The first efforts to incorporate the subject of family in population studies in Latin America and the Caribbean were related to fertility research in the 50's. These studies share the characteristic of considering the family or household as main subject, unit of analysis or conceptual scope -that revises the determinants of the social structure and its influence in the behavior of its members. Four different researches are studied in this paper: family and household formal demography, family strategies, labor markets and the family and, gender and the family. It reviews the theoretical and methodological elements of these researches in Latin America, and particularly Mexico, it analyses the way family as a subject is present and lastly it identifies opportunities for further research.
