Resumen

TABOADA, Hernán G. H.. Centaurus and erudites: the classics during Independence. Latinoamérica [online]. 2014, n.59, pp.193-221. ISSN 2448-6914.

Despite contrary opinions, in the Spanish colonies of America the study of the classical Greek and Roman past had not developed. Prevailed the ecclesiastical bias in the study and use of Latin. The enlightened influence on the independence leaders propitiated a Greek and Roman fashion: mentions of the Classical past became commonplace, there were proposals of establishing the study of Latin and Greek on modern academic grounds, and a general aim of establishing its example among us. For several reasons, nevertheless, there was no Latin American Latin appropriation of the Classics, Latin was lost and Greek never became seriously studied. Classical antiquity was known among us only through the interpretation of the European bourgeoisie.
