Resumen

GUERRERO ONATE, Pablo Andrés. Lawsuits and Negotiations for Territory: Aymaras and State in the South Peruvian Space 1820-1870. Latinoamérica [online]. 2024, n.78, pp.67-93.  Epub 20-Mayo-2024. ISSN 2448-6914.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cialc.24486914e.2024.78.57593.

This article analyzes how in a space inhospitable for the Peruvian State, the use of republican rhetoric, the instrumentalization of the condition of taxpayers and the appeal to ancestral customs, constituted the means for the Aymaras of the high Andean communities to make themselves heard. This negotiating and adaptive capacity allowed them to fight for the defense of their lands, goods and cultural specificity, inserting themselves in the long process of Peruvian national construction as active subjects in the political and socio-territorial. From the analysis of judicial and notarial documentary sources, we will visualize the diversity of means used by them for the defense of their communal rights and how from them, they deployed and developed an alternative political praxis, which allowed them to recognize and strengthen the liberal institutionality of the nation-state and adapt to a context that was not of the Old Regime.
