MESTRIES BENQUET, Francis. Crisis cafetalera y migración internacional en Veracruz. Migr. Inter [online]. 2003, vol.2, n.2, pp.121-148. ISSN 2594-0279.
This article analyzes the socioeconomic causes and effects of international migration by campesino coffee growers from the Jalapa-Coatepec basin of the state of Veracruz. Recently, Veracruz has become one of the states that sends the most migrant workers to the united states. The crisis in traditional agricultural and industrial activities in the state and the regional effects of the international coffee crisis have become the principal macroeconomic determinants of migratory flows in the region. The article explores the conditions for the migratory process, the sociodemographic profile of the migrants, the size and the use of remittances, and the changes wrought on the domestic economy and agricultural productive structure by the coffee crisis and mass international migration. Finally, the situation of the women who remain behind in Veracruz is investigated, and the difficulties they face in their new role as de facto but not de jure heads of family is emphasized.
