AYALA GAYTAN, Edgardo Arturo y CHAPA CANTU, Joana Cecilia. La inseguridad y la demanda por entretenimiento: evidencia para las áreas metropolitanas de Monterrey, Guadalajara y León. EconoQuantum [online]. 2012, vol.9, n.1, pp.135-148. ISSN 2007-9869.
We formulate a demand model that considers the perceived probability of victimization and distinguishes consumer goods in entertainment outside the home and the rest. The results show that the perceived probability of victimization has a negative effect on demand for entertainment outside the home. Model predictions are tested empirically by estimating a probit model of changing habits of eating out or going to the movies, using a crime victimization survey of the metropolitan areas of Monterrey, Guadalajara and Leon in 2009. The results suggest that the level of fear of crime in the neighborhood and in the metropolitan area, schooling, age and gender are significant determinants of changing habits of eating out or going to the movies. Also, we identified prior victimization and confidence in the police as determinants of fear of crime.
