MORGENFELD, Leandro. Obama’s visit and the change of relations between Argentina and the United States. Tla-melaua [online]. 2017, vol.10, n.41, pp.76-94. ISSN 2594-0716.
Two decades after Bill Clinton’s visited Carlos Menem, during the time of Argentina’s alignment with the United States (the so-called “carnal relations” according to the metaphor of the then Argentine chancellor Guido Di Tella), Barack Obama returned to the edge of the continent. George W. Bush had visited Argentina in November 2005, but within the framework of the Fourth Summit of the Americas, when the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) project was rejected. One has to ask. Why did Obama decide to visit Argentina at this particular time? What changes are foreseen in the bilateral relationship, after a decade of tense relations? What agreements were reached during Obama´s visit? How does the approach between Washington and Buenos Aires affects the Inter-American relations?
