During the months of may and june 2008, 270 samples of dog feces were collected at random from the 18 districts of the City of Escárcega, Campeche, Mexico, and the variables sex, body condition and age were recorded. The number of eggs per gram of feces (HPG) was determined for each sample following the McMaster technique, and the eggs and oocysts were identified according to their morphology. Descriptive statistics of prevalence, HPG and associations of the different species found, were obtained. An x2 analysis was also carried out for the variables of parasite association, prevalence by species, and the relationship with the above mentioned variables. The greatest prevalence was Ancylostoma spp (52.22%), followed by Toxocara canis (14.44%) and Trichuris vulpis (9.25%). The highest HPG average was obtained for Ancylostoma spp (724.81 ± 3436.85) followed by Isospora canis (574.44 ± 6911.04) and Toxocara canis (209.81 ± 1678.19). The parasite associations showed that 68.21% of the samples were mono-parasitized, 23.17% where bi-parasitized, and 8.60% were tri-parasitized. Ancylostoma spp was present in most of the parasite association categories. The x2 analysis showed that age was the only variable that was significant and was therefore dependent on the variable gender (Ancylostoma spp Toxocara canis and Isospora canis) (p < 0.01), as well as for parasite association (p < 0.01). It is concluded that the prevalence found for some parasites of veterinary and public health importance in this city poses a risk for these populations and makes it necessary to implement sanitary measures for the prevention and control of these parasitoses.
